Hockey

Asteroids (Ages 6-12)

Set Up:
-Coaches line up along the boards between the blue lines with tennis balls
-Players line up on the goal line
-On the whistle, players need to skate from one goal line to the other without being hit with a tennis ball

Key Coaching Points:
-Players need to skate with their head up to know when balls are coming toward them
-Players need to focus on their balance while lifting their skate up to dodge a ball
-Players need to be able to pay attention to loose balls, as well as those coming from both sides of the ice

Increasing
Time on Task

-Allow players that have been hit with a ball join the coaches in shooting tennis balls
or
-Have players that get his skate back to the previous goal line, then continue skating to the objective goal line

Increasing
Time on Task

-Have players only count to ten before being becoming unfrozen to keep them involved in the game longer

Freeze Tag (Ages 6-12)

Set Up:
-Players and coaches put their sticks away
-Players spread out and try to avoid being tagged by a coach
-If tagged players freeze on the spot and put their arms up
-Unfrozen by having another player skate under their arms
-Alternate: Players tag coaches

Key Coaching Points:
-Players need to skate with their head up to know where the coaches are on the ice
-Players need to work on stopping and sharp turns to try and dodge being tagged

British Bulldog (Ages 6-12)

Set Up:
-Coaches line up across the red line
-Players line up across the goal line
-On the whistle, players need to skate from one goal line to the other without being tagged by a coach
-Alternate: Players try to tag coaches

Key Coaching Points:
-Players need to skate with their head up to know where the coaches are on the ice
-Players need to work on stopping and sharp turns to try and dodge being tagged
-Players need to focus on decision making skills to determine path to skate

Increasing
Time on Task

-Have players that are tagged join the coaches as "Bulldogs"
or
-Have players that are tagged skate back to the previous goal line before attempting to skate to the objective goal line again

Increasing
Time on Task

-Split into four teams and have the drill going on both ends of the ice. (Also gives each goalie their own net)
-Decrease the distance Team 2 needs to skate, but add in stick handling obstacles to have them work on other skills while waiting for their turn to be set up on the "bases"

Baseball (Ages 12-16)

Set Up:
-Place 6-8 "bases" around the net at varying distances from the goal line
-Team 1: Players set up at each base, unable to move from their position. Objective is to pass the puck to every member then get the puck in the net
-Team 2: Players line up in one corner. Objective is to score as many "runs" as possible by skating around the length of the ice to opposite corner before Team 1 scores
-After Team 1 scores, teams and goalies switch

Key Coaching Points:
-Players need to work on quick passes to decrease time spent cycling the puck
-Players need to focus on properly receiving the pass as to not have to chase it down
-Players need to work on making the goalie move with passes
-Players need to focus on decision making when to shoot
-Goaltenders need to focus on tracking the puck and using lateral movement to stay with the play

Quick Shifts (Ages 14-18)

Set Up:
-Split players into teams of 3 or 4 players
-Two teams go head to head trying to score on the other team's net (empty net)
-When a team scores, every member of that team need to skate back and touch their own net
-When a team gets scored on, they need to hustle off and switch with another team
-Team coming off the bench need to tag their new net
-New game begins once both teams tagged their respective nets

Key Coaching Points:
-Players need to focus on protecting their net due to the lack of a goaltender
-Players need to focus on transitioning between offence to defense quickly to avoid giving up an odd man rush
-Players need to take advantage of the extra space on the ice to create offence (East-West play)
-Players sitting off need to react to a goal and get ready to jump on the ice on the fly. Same as a game

Increasing
Time on Task

-Increasing the number of players per team decreases the number of players sitting off, but increases difficulty to score and thus time players remain sitting off (find happy medium)
-Can split the ice in half and have two games going at the same time
